    TEST YOUR JOINT MOBILITY!

Did you know cultures that get up and down off the ground multiple times a day have shown to be the healthiest?

When it comes to joint mobility, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Unfortunately when you “lose it”, you also lose your health.

Thankfully, there’s a test you can do regularly to test your joint health!

    WHAT’S THE TEST?

There was an interesting study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology that featured a useful test I’d like you to take.

You start from a standing position and attempt to smoothly sit all the way to the ground using the least number of contact points with the ground possible other than your feet and butt.

From there, you fold into a cross-legged position and then do the same by standing back up.

    WHAT’S YOUR SCORE?

If you can go through this whole movement sequence smoothly with no extra contact points, you score a perfect ten.

For each contact point, such as using a hand or knee for support on the way up or down, deduct one point. If you wobble at any moment, deduct a half-point from your score.

According to research, middle-aged and elderly people (age fifty-one to eighty) who needed to use both hands and knees to get up and down, averaging the lowest scores (0–3), were almost six times more likely to die during the 6.3-year span of the study compared to those who scored 8–10 points!

    WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

This simple movement sequence of regularly moving up and down from the ground is a testament to a person’s flexibility, strength, balance, and motor coordination.

While it may not seem like a big deal now, you’ll thank your older self when you extend your lifespan.
