The Superfood-Less Super Smoothie

The secret to building the perfect smoothie doesn’t have to include jam-packing it with a thousand different “superfoods”. Not everyone has it in their budget to drop money on reishi, cacao, maca, collagen, etc. If this is you, I suggest instead focusing on the Fab Four when building your smoothies. Many of you have probably heard of this before, but for those who haven't, let me explain…

The “Fab Four” was coined by Kelly LaVeque, and it includes..

  1. Protein

  2. Fiber

  3. Greens

  4. Fat.

Why do I suggest combining these four things into your smoothies?

In a nut shell, the Fab Four work together to balance your hunger hormones and avoid spiking your blood sugar levels – meaning, you won’t feel hungry again an hour after drinking this smoothie. When you combine high-quality sources of protein, fat, fiber, and greens, you should feel full for around 4-6 hours.

No energy crashing, no craving foods, and no thinking about when you’re going to eat next! You’ll feel 100% full and satisfied!

With all of that being said, that was my philosophy behind creating this superfood-less super smoothie. It doesn’t contain any superfoods, but it’s going to keep you full and energized for hours…

Ingredients:

1-2 scoops protein powder of choice (protein)

1/2 cup frozen cauliflower* (Fiber)

2-3 handfuls of spinach (greens)

1 whole avocado* (fat)

1/4 cup nuts of choice*

Water

Ice

Directions:

Toss all ingredients into a blender, aside from the nuts. Amount of ice and water added depends on your desired consistency. More ice and less water will lead to a think ice cream-like consistency. Blend until smooth. Transfer to a cup and top off with your nut of choice.

Notes:

  • I promise, you won’t taste the cauliflower. It will simply make your smoothie thicker (without loading it up with a bunch of carbs/sugar).

  • Freeze your avocado for a creamier consistency.

  • It’s important to add some sort of crunch to your smoothie for enzyme activation. Swap out the nuts for granola, hemp seeds, chia seeds, or whatever crunch you prefer. This will also aid in helping you feel fuller longer after consuming your smoothie!
